Video: Devil’s Slide Tunnel
Created: 12 May 2013
The Devil’s Slide Tunnel (DST) between Pacifica and Montara on HWY 1 is CA’s first major road tunnel project since the 3rd Bore of the Caldecott Tunnel in the sixties of the last century.
Challenging geological conditions dictated tunneling by the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). For the Dr. Sauer Group and on behalf of CALTRANS, we provided second level project risk management services from 2007 – 2010 (end of excavation). Thanks to an excellent team of professionals and everyone’s continual and unambiguous commitment, the DST project delivered not only a new, weather-independent and earthquake-resistant road connection, but at a record-low Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) as well!
We were there and are more than happy to provide our own contribution to one of the lowest AFR’s of any tunneling project and therefore to a record low insurance premium. Everyone involved could save a lot of money as well. Congratulations to opening for traffic on March 25, 2013 – what an impressive success! Video: courtesy of TunnelTalk.
